Almost forgot our newest addition!
We had a fawn born today! Around three thirty this afternoon, one of our tame whitetailed deer gave birth to a healthy looking fawn. The mother (I am pretty sure it is Daisy because Martha wouldn't have given me that look and anyway Daisy's eye shadow is much lighter than Martha's) was really good and washed and nursed her baby right away. We came back a little while later and we couldn't find the baby right away -- which, for those of you unfamiliar with whitetails, is just what Daisy should have done -- and Mommy was eating alfalfa pellets like they were going out of style. I think the geese are jealous because the little kids that were feeding them and their goslings decided that the baby deer was much more interesting and abandoned the feathered pains in the butt to pull up clover for the deer. We will refrain from naming the fawn for a week a) to find out what sex it is and b) to make sure that it is healthy. Unfortunately we have had several fawn that did not live through their first week and we try not to get too attached. Survival of the fittest my shoe! I want to take this one but I will be gone for six weeks and will not be able to take care of it the way I did my girls last summer. (An update on the girls-- Sophie and Jane are doing well but are not as social as they were before the winter of no people. I hope the lure of treats gets them coming up to people again. Unfortunately we lost Flash over the winter so we no longer have his social influence on the rest of the herd. *snifs* I miss him terribly. Ah well, I just need to keep telling myself that eleven was an ancient buck.
If you can think of a good name for Baby, please comment! (no bambi please!) Martha is expecting and we have no idea what to call either of these babies.
